The Wild Coast of South Africa
The Wild Coast falls within the Eastern Cape Province, and is one of South Africa's most untouched regions. The Transkei Wild Coast stretches for 300 miles along the African coast north of East London, and from the Drakensberg Mountains down to the coastline where the warm Indian Ocean flows.
|
This region, which used to be called the Republic of Transkei , is the heart of rural South Africa , and is the cultural homeland of the Xhosa people, and occupies 42,870 square km of rugged terrain.
The area we will travel through is largely inhabited by the Xhosa Tribe and is the centre of the birthplace of Mr. Nelson Mandela. |

We will travel through the village of Qunu, which is the home village of Mr Mandela, and pass by his current residence. In Mthatha we will visit the Nelson Mandela Museum. A large amount of time will be spent travelling through traditional Xhosa villages where we witness Xhosa traditions first hand.
The Wild Coast is an adventurer's paradise. The region is ideal for hiking and walking, with many caves, bays and shipwrecks to explore. There are canoe trials, hiking trials, nature reserves, centres of Xhosa culture, and much more to enjoy. It is a paradise for bird watchers, and is ideal for anglers; game fishing, deep-sea, rock, surf, fly and spear fishing can all be enjoyed. |
