September 24 is Heritage day in South Africa. It's a public holiday which recognises
and celebrates the cultural wealth of our nation. And there’s nothing we South African’s like more than a braai (barbecue) and an ice-cold beer – a fact you will know if you have hunted with us!
We thought we’d share some of our traditional braai side dishes to get you started but there are thousands of others just a ‘Google’ away.
Braai-ready? Grilled Sweetcorn
Sweetcorn, or Mielies as they are known in South Africa, are transformed from a staple food into a simple starter or braai side dish with the addition of spice, mayonnaise and feta.
Three bean salad
This recipe is really quick and simple to prepare so it won’t keep you away from your guests around the fire. It doesn't use lots of fresh ingredients so its perfect when out in the bush when there's no refrigeration.
And to finish….Malva Pudding
Malva Pudding is a true South African pudding dish, with a sweet sponge and a decadent caramelised sticky sauce. It is normally served with hot custard or ice cream.
Left-overs? – make a Braai Pie
This hilarious and practical video from a local South Africa comedienne will show you how to make a Braai Pie with all your left over meat – well worth the 1½ minutes it takes to watch.
